A More Individualized Approach for High School

The sad thing is high school really doesn’t last that long in a single day! Yes, it’s crazy to say that, but it’s true. Sure, as a teen, you couldn’t wait to get out of school on any given day so you could play your 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System or watch a cool movie; but could you imagine just how fun your high school would be if they added more electives–such as “dance,” maybe even “art,” or how about “animation”?

That’s getting to some advanced topics, but there’s not one kid out there who does not know how to make something animated. Don’t even get started on “dance” either. Every kid loves to dance, even the shy ones. When you take the whole social aspect out, it gets easy. Moreover, art itself even has a million different sub-disciplines–such as sculpture, painting, drawing, comic books, art history, papier mache, even things like poetry or storytelling. Fun stuff, right?

Admit it: it wasn’t that you were worn out from the long days; you were simply bored. While the requirements were obviously essential–the math classes, science classes, English courses, yadda yadda–everyone knows it’s important to enrich the young mind with some of the things that allow the young mind to express emotion, passion, joy, things like that. Things like art–music, writing, reading, painting, crafts, all of that–matter in a big way. Kids have imaginations that are only beginning to explode. They need to absolutely use them before that happens; Lord have mercy, they’re like ticking time bombs.

It is possible to increase the level of electives in high school to a standard at least closer to that of college. We just have to give our kids the credit they deserve. They can indeed handle it.
